Last weekend my family and I enjoyed a day at the Made By Hand Craft Fair at City Hall in Cardiff.
It was a lovely Autumn morning so we decided to take a walk down the Taff Trail from my home to the City Hall. My husband was not to keen about spending a Sunday at a craft fair so this lovely walk was my bribe.
The Craft Fair was in Cardiff from 28th – 30th October its purpose was not only for people to browse and buy unique pieces of Art; the fair was also a chance to meet the artists and take part in craft workshops, demos and masterclasses.
As we entered the craft fair we were met by a lovely lady who gave us our wrist bands and a guide to the event.
There were many exhibitor stands in the lower and upper hall. We were all amazed by the many colours and designs we saw as we browsed each stand
My husband even went off on his own to explore!
Other than exhibitor stands the weekend was packed with fun workshops for everyone from tots to adults.
The many workshops included
Feltmaking with Claire Cawte
Small Fabric Paperweights
Creative Embroidery with Suzi Park
English patchwork over papers
Make a Silver Ring with Maggie Cross
Fun with Felt
Hand Knitting with Sue James
Screen Printing with Emily Skinner
Sewing Machine Skills with Helen Rhiannon
Booking is advised for workshops and they are at an extra cost.
Masterclasses are complimentary and included in the price of your ticket they included;
Masterclass with Mark Sanger, woodturner
Masterclass with Walter Keeler, potter
Children could take part in drop in workshops everyday. Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre and Kings Monkton School provided free drop in workshops; children could take away their creations as a memento of their visit.
I have picked a few of my favourite stands of the day
Georgina Fowler – www.georginafowler.co.uk
Georgina says – I am inspired by fairy tales, imagination and the surreal. Through drawing I electronically manipulate images to create a surface pattern that influences the imagination. With the use of bright colours this then explores a dream like existence. The patterns are then applied to ceramic vessels that have also been manipulated to have a subtle twisted shape.
Home Front Vintage
Sara Jane (aka ‘The Map Lady) – www.homefrontvintage.co.uk
Home Front Vintage rescues genuine silk ‘escape and evasion’ maps and remakes them into beautiful gifts and accessories for people who value British heritage and provenance with a contemporary twist.
I thought the Home Front Vintage would be great place to go to for men’s quirky Christmas gifts.

Tea Party at the Zoo
My four year old son’s favourite stall was that by Hannah Lago – Tea Party at the Zoo
Hannah say’s – ‘Tea Party at the Zoo’ combines a number of things I love; fashion, illustration, alarmingly bright colours, vintage influences and animals.
Tea Party at the Zoo
After exploring the many stands my 4 year old son and I made a badge. Ethan really enjoyed looking at different shapes and prints. I must admit I got very involved making my owl badge…I am a big kid when it comes to crafts.
Before we left the fair I spoke to a lovely lady from Craft of Hearts – www.craftofhearts.co.uk
Craft of Hearts are a community enterprise offering a wide range of craft activities, clothes and gifts. I am arranging to meet with Jo to discuss how we can work together soon.
I am amazed at the beautiful pieces art work Craft of Hearts have made from recyclable materials.
As we left the Craft fair my husband said how much he enjoyed himself, Ethan was proud as punch with the badge he made and I was absolutely in love with my Poppy gift Jo gave to me from Craft of Hearts.
The next Contemporary Craft Festival will be held at Mill Marsh Park, Bovey Tracey, Devon from the 9th – 11th June 2017 – www.craftsatboveytracey.co.uk
