Team Wales have been crowned this year’s Celebrity Cup winners at Celtic Manor Resort. The team captained by Gethin Jones stormed to victory in a tense finale against Team England. The Welsh team triumphed with a stellar line-up of celebrities packed with rugby legends Gareth Edwards, Ieuan Evans, Jonathan Davies and Scott Quinnell, plus award-winning actor Phil Glenister.
The victory marked the end of an action-packed two day charity golf tournament at Celtic Manor Resort, where celebrities representing England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales battled it out over a nine hole course. Stars including Mike Tindall, James Nesbitt, Jenni Falconer, Thom Evans, James Anderson, Ronan Keating and the cast of Mrs Brown’s Boys swapped paparazzi for putters to raise funds for Velindre Cancer Centre.
Crowds of spectators watched on as the thrilling final round saw Team Wales and Team England fighting it out for the trophy, with team Scotland taking third place and team Ireland coming in fourth.
The final was heading for a tense finish when BBC Six Nations pundit Jonathan Davies holed a testing five footer to level the opening match, but Scott Quinnell and Phil Glenister trounced Mike Tindall and Graeme Swann, leaving the team skipper Gethin Jones to fittingly hole the winning putt in the final match.
It is only the second time Wales have won the Celebrity Cup, having been inspired to victory by superstar footballer Gareth Bale in 2015.
“I’ve already tried ringing (former captain) Rob Brydon who is gutted he couldn’t be here this week,” said Gethin at the prize presentation. “He didn’t answer – probably because he heard the roar from up in Edinburgh. But don’t worry, I’ll be telling him all about it soon enough. Can I just say a big thank you to the crowds who gave us so much support this weekend and helped us raise so much money for a fantastic local charity.”
Bradley Walsh, the gracious losing England skipper in the final, added: “I would just like to thank the tournament organisers for another incredible weekend. I’d like to thank the whole team at Celtic Manor and Sir Terry Matthews for building this unbelieve resort – the best in the UK!”
The Welsh Mummy Blogs family attended the event yesterday (1st June) It was fantastic! The event was relatively calm and relaxed. I was thrilled as I got to enjoy the day with my family without crowds of people.
So what did we get up to?
There really is so much family fun to be had at the Celebrity Cup with top notch golf, celeb spotting, autographs and laughter. Tempting food options, bars and attractions in the tented village, you don’t have to be a fan of golf to attend. We really were spoilt for choice.
Being Welsh we spent most of our day cheering on and following Team Wales around the golf courses. Gethin Jones was amazing!
I did hop over to watch other teams, Team Ireland being another favourite of mine, although I think that has to do with Keith Duffy and Ronan Keating of Boyzone – I was a huge fan as a girl!!
The Spectators village was filled with family friendly entertainment and delicious food which included: The Grill, Cen Asian Fusion, pizza and summer strawberries. There was also a Prosecco van!
The main stage in the Spectator Village played host to live music during the lunch break and at the end of the play.
Capital FM Entertainment was stationed in the buggy park, they were offering a game of spin the wheel, music and entertainment. I had a go on the spin the wheel and won a cup of sweets, yummy!
Children were entertained with a Kids Zone. The Kids Zone offered face painting and inflatables.
We even got a chance to see the Red Arrows fly by!
My highlight of the day was meeting the Celebrity Cup teams. Of all the events I have attended this was the most relaxed when it come to meeting celebrities and capturing photos. Fans were able to ask for photos and autographs with ease.
Mrs Brown’s boys star and creator Brendan O’Carroll and his wife Jennifer Gibney (Kathy, Mrs Brown’s Boys) were lovely in person. Brendan even had a joke around with my Mam.
I met the very good looking Max Evans and Thom Evans of Team Scotland.
I also met many other celebrities including Keith Duffy and Ronan Keating, I just don’t want to bore you with all my pictures haha! If you do want to take a look at my day in photos you can head to my Instagram page.
Visitors also had the chance to experience the VIP treatment in Hospitality and some lucky guests joined the celebs for a glittering Gala Dinner on Saturday evening.
