All children book reviews are written with my 5-year-old son.
If you could change something about yourself, would you do it? When Sarah Simpkins is teased about her shadow in the school playground, she finds herself wishing she didn’t have one. That night she has the chance to make the wish come true. But will losing her shadow really make her happy?
My mum has just read my brother and I a new book! Its called Sarah’s Shadow, its written by Nick Jones.
Sarah does not like her shadow. A girl in school is mean to her about it, she says Sarah’s shadow is long and thin just like Sarah. The naughty girl makes Sarah feel sad. “It’s not nice when people do that, I know a few people in my school that make fun of other children. It’s not nice, I would never do that!”
That night Sarah is looking out of her bedroom window when she sees a shooting star! “I have never seen one of them, Sarah is soooo lucky!” After spotting the shooting star, Sarah runs down stairs to tell her mum. Her mum says it is very lucky and she should make a wish on the star.
Sarah knows exactly what she wants to wish for. Sarah wants her shadow to disappear! “I would never ever wish for that, I love my shadow. I would probably wish for a LEGO Batman or maybe a dog!”
That night Sarah sees her shadow disappear, she feels good at first but then she misses it. She is sad again.
Will Sarah’s shadow ever come back? You will have to read the ending.
Sarah’s shadow is a lovely book that touches on issues such as bullying, loneliness and friendship. The illustrations by Si Clark are fantastic.
