Most of us think Bella Italia is a romantic restaurant for adults. I myself would walk past the restaurant located in the Cardiff Red Dragon Centre with the kids and never think to go in for a family meal.
The restaurant looked dark and un-welcoming to families with young children. It certainly didn’t look like your typical family restaurant.
All that has changed.
Bella Italia has recently been refurbished. Gone is the small, dark and dingy restaurant. Families are now being welcomed by a light spacious space with beautiful decor and artwork perfectly displayed across the restaurant.
Bella Italia has thought of everything when it comes to families. From cosy family seating areas to high chairs and fun ‘take home’ twirly straws.
Children’s meals, fun colouring and an ice cream station! What more could you ask for when entertaining a child in a restaurant.
After all what are Italians know for other than pizza? Family of course!
Bella Italia is very family orientated, I witnessed two children’s birthday parties taking place whilst we were there!
We were seated in one of the family pockets of the restaurant.
My husband and I ordered from the Italian Feast Set Menu. You can order two courses for £12.99 or three courses for £15.99
The boys (aged 6 and 4 years) were to have a meal from the children’s menu.
The kids menu is available in two sizes. Piccolo (Perfect for 2-6 year olds) at £5.95 and Grande ( perfect for 7-11 year olds) at £7.95. Both options offer a starter, main, dessert and drink. It’s also good to note that it includes free refills of squash.
For starters I opted for the Insalata Rosso (Vine tomatos, black olives & onion with lemon dressing)
This starter was nice. It was a perfect starter portion size, the tomato’s were fresh and the olives were delicious. I do think more lemon could of been added but that’s just my personal preference.
My husband opted for the Calamari (Tender squid in a light batter with lemon & garlic mayonnaise)
This dish was again a perfect starter size. The squid was fresh and the batter was not greasy at all. The garlic and lemon mayonnaise was a delight on the tastebuds – perfect starter and great combination with the delightful mayonnaise.
The boys decided on a small starter of Dippers Italiano (Grissini breadsticks, cucumber and carrot sticks, served with tomato dip)
For my main course I ordered Pomodoro Pasta (Fresh pasta twists in a rich tomato sauce)
It was beautiful! The dish was in the under 600 calories range, which is good to know if you are watching your weight. This meal was like a comforting hug. Warm, fresh and rich. The sauce was tasty and it complimented the fresh pasta twists perfectly.
My husband ordered Polpette Americano Pasta (Spaghetti with beef &pork meatballs & roasted onions in a spicy garlic & tomato sauce)
My husband said, “Wow, that was an exceptionally nice meal” he would like to go back next week to have it again!
The boys ordered Burger Bellissimo (Beef burger served with chips and mini veggie skewers)
The portion size was perfect for my 6 year old and he said it was the “best burger ever” my 4 year old looked as though he was struggling with the size of the meal but the meal is intended for older children.
Dessert, on to dessert! I was far to full after my main to order one but that didn’t stop my hubby or the boys.
My husband ordered Sicilian Lemon “Cheesecake”
Again, my husband said it was amazing. He said, “it’s really lemony, creamy and a perfect refreshing way to end a meal”
The boys opted for a Create Your Own Gelato!
Myself and the boys made our way to the gelato station where we found jars upon jars of sweets, Ice cream and sauces. My eldest said it was like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory! I actually forgot what they decided to have on their ice cream because it was almost gone by the time we got back to our table!!
Bella Italia has an affordable menu, friendly, knowledgeable staff and a great family atmosphere.
That is why Bella Italia is our favourite family restaurant. We are looking to book my mum’s birthday there and our family Christmas meal.
