“500 years ago no-one died of stress: we invented this concept and now we let it rule us. We might have evolved to be able to miraculously balance on seven-inch heels, but as far as our emotional development is concerned we’re still swimming with the pond scum. If we don’t advance our more human qualities then we’re doomed evolution-wise to become cyborgs, with an imprint of an ‘Apple’ where our hearts used to be. Ruby Wax shows us a scientific solution to these modern problems: mindfulness. – Frazzled
Last night I visited one of my favourite venues in Cardiff the Sherman Theatre.
Tonight I was to watch American actress, mental health campaigner, comedian and author Ruby Wax in a one women show based on her new book – A Mindfulness Guide For The Frazzled.
My mother is a big Ruby Wax fan and I remember watching her on the TV when I was a child. I always thought, one day I would love to be that confident, her stage presence was always amazing and she wore red lipstick!
After years of acting, writing, meeting and interviewing many famous faces including Americas New President Donald Trump, Ruby decided to study. It may have been her interest in mental illness and the mind or it may have been down to her personally suffering years of depression.
Ruby started an academic career, graduating in psychology and in 2013 she gained a master’s degree in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy from Oxford University.
The one women show was basically Ruby Wax interviewing herself about her career change, mindfulness and her personal thoughts and feelings about life and the mind in general.
Smart, witty and exciting, Ruby’s performance was superb!
Ruby was knowledgeable on her subject and she spoke with passion. I completely related to her way of thinking, the mind is a powerful thing.
When you think of mindfulness the thing that usually springs to mind is calm, tranquillity and silence. You dont think mindfulness = Ruby Wax, comedian, but it really works. She has effortlessly entwined both subjects.
The sold out show was a true representation of equality, with an audience of both young and old, Ruby clearly attracts a diverse audience.
I was lucky enough to get to meet Ruby and have her sign my book. I spoke briefly about the mental health charity I foundered PMH Cymru and that we offer mindfulness, she looked impressed!
Ruby Wax was amazing and I highly recommend anyone with an interest in mindfulness go see her on tour!
